Welcome to Laughton Lodge
Laughton Lodge is a small residential community set in 23 acres of East Sussex countryside, on the edge of the village of Laughton and overlooking the South Downs. Around 70 people of all ages live here in their own homes, sharing land, some buildings, and aspects of daily life.
People come to Laughton Lodge because they’re looking for a balance: having their own space and independence, while being part of a place where neighbours know one another and life is lived a little more closely connected to the land and to each other. Laughton Lodge is one of the UK’s longest-established intentional communities – a form of community living where private homes and shared life sit alongside one another.
Children grow up here with room to roam and explore, surrounded by families and trusted adults – the kind of village environment that many of us want for our kids but which can be hard to find. Adults at every stage of life find their place here too, with that rare combination of nature, green space and a tight-knit support network of people who genuinely look out for one another.
We gather every Friday evening for a community potluck, and throughout the year we mark the seasons with celebrations – from our summer party to a Christmas cabaret and a biennial art exhibition that brings together artists and makers from the surrounding area.
At the heart of the site is a large community building with a hall, kitchen, dining room, meeting rooms, offices and guest rooms (all available to hire) set within beautiful meadows, gardens, mature oak trees, woodland, an orchard, allotments and ponds.

Hire our spaces
We regularly welcome external groups for yoga and dance classes, festivals, retreats and private events, offering the chance to connect and create in a beautiful rural setting.
